Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of erythrocytes (red blood cells), which provide oxygen transport in the body. They are lying here in a thrombus, a blood clot. A thrombus can clog a blood vessel at its point of origin, or it can be carried along by the bloodstream and cause blockages elsewhere, leading to the loss of organs' blood supply. This is called an embolism or thromboembolism. Thrombi are formed after vascular injuries, through disorders of blood coagulation (hemostasis) or from too little movement. Magnification is 4000x.
