Description
Wild horse (Equus caballus) in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota. Horses such as these are descended from horses that escaped from Spanish explorers in the 16th century, becoming known as "mustangs," from the Spanish word "mestango," meaning wild. They have existed in the badlands of western North Dakota since the mid-19th century.
