Description
Fruit fly mutant. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head of a mutant fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster with leg antennae. Both of its multifaceted compound eyes are visible (large, red). Between the eyes are legs in the place of antennae, the product of a genetic mutation (known as leg-antennae). Normal antennae are fleshy pads much smaller than the legs seen here. Mutations such as this are produced by the artificial disruption of gene expression during the fly's early developmental stages. Drosophila melanogaster has been used for many years in genetic studies because it is easy to manipulate in a laboratory. Magnification x70 at 6x6cm size.
