Description
Fanciful engraving, depicting Jones as a pirate. John Paul Jones (July 6, 1747 - July 18, 1792) was a Scottish-American naval hero of the American Revolutionary War. Congress sent him to France as captain of the Ranger with orders to attack enemy commerce in British waters. He captured the sloop of war Drake in a fierce struggle which created a furor in the British press. In the Battle of Flamborough Head, pitting Jones' Bonhomme Richard against the British Serapis, the British captain asked Jones if he wished to surrender and received the famous reply, "I have not yet begun to fight." Published in England 1770s-80s (cropped and cleaned).
