Artist's Description

Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of serpentinite from near Saint Florent (Corsica). Serpentinite forms from metamorphism and hydration of former peridotites or ultramafic rocks that originated in the Earth's mantle. When serpentinite is found, geologists infer the mantle provenance of part of the bedrock. In these rocks the platy or needle-like mineral serpentine creates extremely variegated textures, often with arrangements to form networks of veinlets. Polarized light, crossed polarizers and red tint lambda plate. The rock slice (thin section) is 30-micron-thick. Zeiss Axioscop 40pol. Width of view 2.7 mm.
