Description
Mutant fruit fly. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) four wing mutant. Two of the mutant's four wings are visible (blue) on one side of it's body (brown). The multi-faceted right eye of the fly (red) is also visible. The wild-type fly has two wings and is approximately 2mm long. The four wing mutation is produced by selective cross-breeding genetic experiments. Drosophila melanogaster is widely used for genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it reproduces rapidly and easily in the laboratory. Magnification x12 at 6x6cm size.
