Description
Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula). These 16 inch tall owls often hunt in daytime for small rodents from treetops in open spruce and aspen woods. This one was photographed during the owl invasion during the winter of 2004/2005 in northern Minnesota. These owls move south in larger than normal numbers when the populations of prey species, like red-backed voles, crash.
