Description
Color-enhanced SEM of Bifidobacterium breve. Bifidobacteria (from Latin bifidus, "split, forked"), are gram-positive, immobile, non-spore forming, predominantly anaerobic rods. They metabolize different sugars to lactic acid, thereby reducing the pH of the intestine, eliminating many harmful intestinal bacteria. Thus they have a regulatory effect on the intestinal flora and a positive influence on stool consistency and frequency. Bifidobacterium breve is in many "probiotic" food supplements, as well as in milk powder for babies. Many Bifidobacteria are part of the normal bacterial community of the gastrointestinal tract, appendix and vagina (B. bifidum, B. adolescentis, B. breve, B. longum and B. infantis). Magnification 10,0001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
