Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cell (BGM-Cell) infected with Q fever bacteria (Coxiella burnetii). Q fever is a disease present in livestock that can be spread to humans by inhalation of contaminated particles. It is thought to be the most infective disease known, with just one bacterium capable of causing infection. Q fever causes flu-like symptoms, with fever, malaise, headache and nausea. It can progress to pneumonia, which can be fatal. Chronic infection leads to inflammation of the inner lining of the heart, which is fatal if untreated. Magnification 4,3001 at 12x12 cm.
