Description
Portrait of Frederick Douglass (1818-1895). Born a slave in Maryland, Frederick Douglass escaped at about 20 years old. Educated and articulate, he settled in MA, where he became involved in the abolitionist movement. He traveled widely and lectured tirelessly against slavery. By the early 1860s he was known throughout the country and was influential in Northern political circles. He met with Lincoln at least twice, and inspired blacks to serve in the federal army.
