Description
Spruce-fir forest on Clingman's Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with dead snags of Fraser Firs, (Abies fraseri), killed by Balsam Woolly Adelgid Aphid, (Adelges piceae), an insect native to Europe. In the past 40 years 80-90% of Fraser firs in the National Park have succumbed to the aphid. Clingman's Dome, 6643 feet above sea level, is the highest mountain in the National Park and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Spruce trees are Red Spruce,( Picea rubens), and have not been parasitized by the aphid.
