Description
An illustration showing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition in which damage to the retina leads to progressive vision loss. The macula is a region near the center of the retina with a high desity of photoreceptors responsible for high acuity vision. Cellular debris, called drusen, can accumulate between the retinal pigment epithelium and the choroid, resulting in dry AMD. As the disease progresses, abnormal blood vessel growth causes excess blood and fluid to leak into the retina, resulting in wet AMD. Displacement and damage to the photoreceptors eventually leads to vision loss.
