Description
Painting of Avalokitesvara (also known as Padmapani or Lokesvara), a Buddhist bodhisattva who represents compassion, usually shown holding a lotus flower, as seen here. Photographed in Cave 1 of the Ajanta Caves, Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India. The 30 caves at the site date from the 2nd century BCE to 600 CE. Cave 1 dates from the Vakataka Empire, i.e., between 250 and 500 CE.
