8F2401; A sign welcoming people to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, otherwise known as the Atomic City, circa 1950. The town was part of 59,000 acres acquired by the US government for the Manhattan Project, which was established to develop nuclear weapons during WWII. The sign reads: "The Atomic City welcomes you. Please drive and walk carefully. 137 days since our last traffic fatality. Our record - 1423 days to Nov. 6, 1949."
