Bacteria in wine which had been infected with fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster. Live fruit flies were suspended in inexpensive red wine and ten days later, when the wine turned sour with vinegar-like flavour, the bacteria present were captured on a bacterial filter and photographed under an SEM. Compared to a mannitol-containing medium, the bacteria propagated considerably slower in the wine and they were not as diverse. Vinegar is diluted acetic acid (ethanoic acid) resulting from oxidation of ethyl alcohol (ethanol). Enhanced SEM. Image width 10.7 micrometers. Magnification 9345x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
