Color enhanced scanning electron microscope image (SEM) of the spirochete bacteria Borrelia bavariensis. There are 52 known species of Borrelia. 21 of these can cause Lyme disease, including the species pictured, Borrelia bavariensis. This bacteria is found in Europe and Asia and is transmitted by the tick Ixodes ricinus. Initial symptoms include eczema (migratory erythema / bullseye rash). Weeks later there may be inflammation of the meninges and spinal cord or inflammation-like joint pain (arthritis). In this image you can see a red blood cell with three Borrelia. Magnification 6,600x when printed at 10 centimeters wide.
