Description
Colored scanning electron micrograph of the hairs (trichomes) on a stem of the Bunny Ears cactus (Opuntia microdasys). The long trichomes help to protect the plant from pests. In the right and left center, smaller projections cover two stomata which are openings that regulate gas exchange between the plant and the atmosphere. The origin of this cactus is northern Mexico but it is grown worldwide as an ornamental plant. Magnification is x190 at 6x7cm or x320 at 4x5".
