Artist's Description
Celery (Apium graveolens) seed (1-1.5 mm long and 1 mm in diameter) is one of the lesser-known herbs in Western herbal medicine and is used as a spice. Ayurvedic physicians (vaidyas) used celery seed during ancient times to treat colds, flu, water retention, poor digestion, various types of arthritis, and some ailments of the liver and spleen. The diuretic action combined with the presence of anti-bacterial compounds in celery seed also make it useful in treating urinary tract infections. Compounds in celery seed and its essential oil may reduce muscle spasms, calm the nerves, and reduce inflammation. Some experts claim that celery seed alleviates the pain associated with certain inflammatory health conditions such as arthritis and gout. Celery seed oil is used as a fixative and as an ingredient in novel perfumes.
