Description
The Cock-eyed Squid, Histoteuthis corona, (Histoteuthidae) is found in tropical and subtropical waters around the Atlantic Ocean. Among its peculiarities, this squid has one eye which is larger than the other -- thus the common name. Some biologists speculate that the eyes serve different functions and the squid orients its body to use its large eye to look upward for predators and prey silhouetted by whatever light may reach it from the surface. The other eye presumably detects bioluminescence below the animal. This specimen was captured in a trawl in the Gulf of Mexico, 2015.
