Artist's Description

The Colored National Convention held at Nashville, April 5-7, 1876. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The Negro Convention movement started in Philadelphia in 1830 when the first National Negro Convention convened to ponder the question of mass migration to Canada, given "the hopelessness of contending against oppression in the United States." For several decades, conventions were held at local, state, and national levels, and the issue of emigration was often on the agenda.
