Description
Color-enhanced SEM of the larva of a diving beetle (Rhantus sp.). With their four-point eyes and powerful mandibles, the larvae of the diving beetle (family Dytiscidae) look awe-inspiring. Like the adult beetles, the larvae hunt tadpoles and other insect larvae, but their manner of feeding differs greatly they do not break apart and chew up their prey. Instead, they use their proboscis to inject paralyzing digestive juices into the body of their victim and then suck out the insides. Magnification 601 at an image size of 15x15 cm.
