Dr. Seth Arnold was listed in the N. E. Mercantile Union Directory of 1849 as an eclectic physician and a patent medicine manufacturer located in Smithfield, Rhode Island. By 1864, Seth was putting out many of his own medicines and was president of his own laboratory, the Dr. Seth Arnold Medicinal Corp. Dr. Seth Arnold's Cough Killer claimed to cure coughs, colds, pneumonia, asthma, croup, malaria, inflammation of the stomach, and malignant fevers. Morphine is a potent opiate analgesic drug that is used to relieve severe pain. "Patent medicine" is a misnomer since in most cases, although products might be trademarked, they are not patented. The promotion of patent medicines was one of the first major products highlighted by the advertising industry, and many advertising and sales techniques were pioneered by patent medicine promoters.
