Description
E. coli entero-hemorrhage bacteria. Colored scanning electron micrograph of entero-hemorrhage Escherichia coli (EHEC) bacteria. This is a dangerous form of the benign E. coli bacteria which live in the intestine. Usually transmitted by food poisoning, it can cause life-threatening diarrhoea, intestinal bleeding, kidney failure and disturbances to blood clotting. There are no effective cures for EHEC, but there are treatments for dealing with the symptoms of infection.
