Artist's Description

The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, proclaiming freedom for millions of slaves. This is a facsimile that was sold at the Northwestern Sanitary Fair in Chicago in 1865 to benefit the Soldiers' Home. The original document was destroyed in the Chicago Fire in 1871.
