The platform of the Ah-toh, Dahomey, West Africa, 1854. Prisoners of war in white dresses and high red caps are lashed to boats. After ceremonies before the absolute monarch of Dahomey, the prisoners are pushed into a twelve-foot pit where their heads are cut off and their bodies thrown to the mob A ceremonial gathering depicts individuals carrying ornate objects and structures while others participate. The scene appears to take place outdoors, with different groups engaged in distinct ritualistic activities.
