Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the foot of an Ant Spider (Myrmarachne formicaria). Ant spiders belong to the family of jumping spiders (Salticidae). This small spider is an ant mimic, for the purpose of avoiding predators. In addition to a small claw, the foot of the ant spider has brush-like hairs which allow it to glide across smooth surfaces, appearing to move more like an ant than a jumping spider. It also extends its front pair of legs upward, mimicking antennae. Magnification 400x at 15x12cm image size.
