Description
Fujikawa. Pilgrims passing through a small village in a snow-covered landscape; Fujikawa is the 38th station on the Tokaido Road. Ukiyo-e (picture of the floating world) is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. The Japanese landscape differed from the Western tradition in that it relied more heavily on imagination, composition, and atmosphere than on strict observance of nature. From the series Gojusantsugi meisho zue Views of famous places of the 53 stations of the Tokaido Road. Utagawa Hiroshige, 1855.
