Description
Gaspard de Coligny (February 16, 1519 - August 24, 1572) was a nobleman and Admiral of France. The wedding of the Protestant Henry, King of Navarre, and Marguerite de Valois, the King's sister, brought many Huguenot notables to Paris, and political and religious tensions were running high. On August 22 1572, Coligny was shot in the street, but he bullets only tore a finger from his right hand. The Catholics, fearing a Huguenot retaliation, decided to assassinate their leadership, in what became known as the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Coligny was attacked in his lodgings. A sword was plunged through his breast, he was thrown out a window and his head was chopped off. Engraving by Jost Amman, 1573 (cropped and cleaned).
