Description
The Giant Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is a denizen of rivers and lakes in southeast Asia. These prawns can grow to large sizes, up to 33cm, and males have elongate front arms with considerable chelae "pinchers." The rostrum of this species is long and can have between 11 and 14 "rostral teeth." Adults breed in freshwater but the larvae require brackish water to survive. After developing in brackish waters, subadults migrate back into fresh water habitats. The species has been cultivated around the world as food for humans. Aquaculture of prawns in Thailand represents a significant percentage of the gross domestic product. These individuals were photographed in Thailand, 2011.
