Entitled "Harry Houdini, king of cards" lithograph poster created by National Printing and Engraving Company, 1895. Harry Houdini (March 24, 1874 - October 31, 1926) was a Hungarian-American illusionist and stunt performer, noted for his sensational escape acts. He began his magic career in 1891. He performed in dime museums and sideshows, and even doubled as "The Wild Man" at a circus. He focused initially on traditional card tricks and billed himself as the "King of Cards". He soon began experimenting with escape acts. In 1893, he met a fellow performer, Wilhelmina Beatrice "Bess" Rahner. They married in 1894, and for the rest of his performing career, Bess worked as his stage assistant. He first attracted notice as "Harry Handcuff Houdini" on a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up.
