Description
Carte-de-visite of Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) from 1871, "in the dress he wore when he met Livingstone in Africa," posing with an African boy. Stanely was a Welsh journalist and explorer famous for his search for David Livingstone. He was sent by the New York Herald to find the Scottish missionary who had not been heard from for several years. In 1871, Stanley found the ill Livingstone in Tanzania and nursed him back to health. The two men then explored the north end of Lake Tanganyika. Stanley returned to Europe in 1872, but Livingstone stayed on and died on an expedition the next year. Along with Livingstone, Stanley became a celebrity in the eyes of a Victorian public captivated by their story and explorations.
