The viruses are color-coded according to their layer structure spikes to attach to the host cell green; lipid layer of the outer shell yellow; matrix green; wedge-shaped core with RNA red. HIV belongs to the family of retroviruses and the genus of lentiviruses. Infection leads to an incubation period, usually lasting several years, for AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), a currently incurable immune deficiency disease. Magnification 40,000x (in a 12x12cm size image).
