Description
Satellite image of a large glacier that shattered after calving from the Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica. The iceberg measured over 300 square kilometers. In the past, large icebergs would break from Antarctica’s Pine Island Glacier every four to six years. Calving now occurs almost annually, and the bergs tend to more easily break up into smaller pieces. The fracturing indicates how weak the ice shelf has become, as relatively warm water in Pine Island Bay is partly melting it from below. Landsat image acquired February 11, 2020.
