Artist's Description
Glasier's instruments. Balloonists James Glaisher and Henry Tracey Coxwell carried out experiments in the air for the British Association for the Advancement of Science. On September 5, 1862, they reached the greatest height achieved to that date. They both lost consciousness during the ascent. Later calculations estimated their maximum altitude at 35,000 to 37,000 ft. Travels In the Air, 1871.
