Artist's Description

Engraving depicting Jones as a pirate. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was a Scottish-American naval hero of the American Revolutionary War. Congress sent him to France with orders to attack enemy commerce in British waters. In 1778 he captured the sloop of war Drake in a fierce struggle which created a furor in the British press. His victory at Battle of Flamborough Head, pitting his Bonhomme Richard against the British Serapis, was one of the most celebrated naval actions of the war. Engraving circa 1770s-80s. Colorized.
