Artist's Description
Scanning electron micrograph of the foot of a jumping spider (Myrmarachne formicaria) that looks very similar to and mimics ants. This approximately 5mm large spider has a small claw, and foot with brush-like hair, which allow it to run on smooth surfaces or on the ceiling like geckos. She moves with three rear pairs of legs continuously jumping, while her first pair of legs act as feeler stretched into the air. Jumping spiders belong to the family of the Salticidae. They are found in the southern part of Europe, on sunny grassy slopes, but also in orchards or wet meadows. Adults spend the winter (one or more) in old snail shells. Magnification is 1200x at 15x12cm image size.
