Description
These images of California's Lake Oroville, the state’s second largest reservoir, were captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on June 4, 2019 (left) and June 9, 2021 (right). Because of historic drought conditions, the reservoir's water level fell 190 feet (58 meters), from 895 to 705 feet above sea level. The tan fringes around the lake in the later image are areas that would be underwater if the reservoirs were filled closer to capacity. This phenomenon is often referred to as a "bathtub ring.”
