Description
These images of California's Lake Shasta, the state’s largest reservoir, were captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on July 13, 2019 (top) and June 16, 2021 (bottom). Because of historic drought conditions, the reservoir in 2021 is at about 41 percent of capacity and 49 percent of the historical average for this time of year. The lake level has dropped 106 feet in elevation. The tan fringes around the lake in the later image are areas that would be underwater if the reservoirs were filled closer to capacity. This phenomenon is often referred to as a "bathtub ring.”
