Artist's Description

Latting Observatory on 42nd St. between 5th and 6th Avenues in New York City. It built as part of the 1853 Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, adjoining the New York Crystal Palace, and it burnt down in 1856. It was 315 feet (96 m) high, the tallest building in the United States during its brief existence, and was later described as "New York's first skyscraper."
