Lithograph entitled "New York and Brooklyn, 1884." Bird's eye view Manhattan the most densely populated and the oldest of the five boroughs of New York City. The rate of immigration from Europe grew steeply after the Civil War, and New York became the first stop for millions seeking a new and better life in the United States. In 1883, the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge established a road connection across the East River to Brooklyn.
