Engraving showing Maria (or Mary) the Jewess (also known as Maria Prophetessa), considered the first non-fictional alchemist on record. She is credited with the invention of several kinds of chemical apparatus. She lived at some time during the first to third centuries, but no reliable sources have more detail. She is referred to by almost all the early alchemists in terms of respect and reverence. This engraving comes from "Symbola aureae" by Michael Maier, published at Frankfurt in 1617.
