Mrs. Abraham Lincoln engraved by Samuel Sartai, 1864. Mary Ann Todd Lincoln (1818 - 1882) was the First Lady from 1861-65. She was courted by Stephen A. Douglas but chose to marry Abraham Lincoln, who would defeat Douglas in their bid for the presidential election. She suffered from severe headaches throughout her adult life as well as depression. Historians and psychologists speculate that Mary suffered from bipolar disorder.
