Artist's Description
Medieval Arabic scholars watching their teacher demonstrate an astrolabe. In the Middle Ages, there were many observatories in the Arabic world where lessons like this would have been held. These centers expanded rapidly in the ninth century, during the reigh of Caliph' Abd Allah al-Ma'mun (September 13, 786 - August 9, 833). The caliph founded the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, which included an observatory, and ordered the scientists there to produce more accurate astronomical tables.
