Description
A high magnification view of a thin section through the pancreas of a bat, showing a mitochondrion in profile. Cristae can clearly be seen infolded in portions of the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. Mitochondria are organelles (subcellular components) that convert organic materials into energy, while cristae are protein-studded internal compartments that, by increasing the surface area, create more chemical reactions and thus more energy. Magnification 85,000x.
