Description
Wood engraving depicing Modoc Indians in their stronghold in the lava beds near Tule Lake in northern California during the Modoc War of 1873. Unhappy on an Oregon reservation, about 75 Modoc warriors and their families, after some violent skirmishes with the local white population, retreated to the lava beds, an area of ravines, caves, unusual rock formations and fissues they knew well. For months they waged a successful guerrilla war against hundreds of US Army forces sent against them. This illustration originally appeared in Harper's Weekly, May 3, 1873.
