Description
Monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus, pupa hanging from a milkweed, Asclepias sp., branch. A butterfly pupae is called a chrysalis. The chrysalis contains the larva as it metamorphosizes into a butterfly. It is an example of complete metamorphosis. The pupa hangs from a pad of silk spun by the caterpillar and attached to hooks on the abdomen called the cremaster.
