Colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Neisseria meningitidis, a gram-negative diplococcal bacterium that causes meningitis and other forms of meningococcal disease. Meningococcus is spread through the exchange of saliva. Meningitis begins with a symptoms such as fatigue, high fever, vomiting, chills, joint and muscle pain, cramps, or disturbances of consciousness; one characteristic symptom is neck stiffness. It is treated with antibiotics. Magnification 20,0001 at 12x10 cm.
