Description
A 17th-century engraving of an extremely patched face. In the 1600s, it was in vogue for both women and men to paste black patches on their faces. Here the patches are in the shape of stars and moons and a carriage with horses. At first, the patches may have been used to cover pockmarks but soon were treated as beautiful adornments. Special boxes with mirrors were made to keep the black taffeta patches.
