Artist's Description

Orville Wright remains in the air 9 minutes and 45 seconds in a Wright glider at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, setting a new world record that would stand for 10 years. Following the first ever powered flight in the Wright Flyer I at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the brothers continued to develop their aircraft design. This resulted in an aircraft that was able to travel further and at greater altitude, due to the addition of a more powerful (16 horsepower) engine. Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and his brother Wilbur (1867-1912), were two Americans credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. Neither brother married.
