Description
A scan across Saturn's incredible halo of ice rings yields a study in precision and order. This natural color mosaic was acquired by the Cassini spacecraft as it soared 39 degrees above the unilluminated side of the rings. The view combines 45 images -- 15 separate sets of red, green and blue images -- taken over the course of about 2.5 hours, as Cassini scanned across the rings. The D rings is the dark section on the left side. The largest gap from the left is called the Colombo Gap. The light expanse between this gap and the next gap to the right (the Maxwell Gap) is the C ring. The section between the Maxwell Gap and the next large gap to its right (The Huygens Gap) is the B ring. The Cassini Division is right next to it (next black gap). To the left of the Cassini Division is the A ring which contains the next large gap (The Encke Gap). The next narrow band of black is the Keeler Gap. The F ring can be seen on the far right. This view was obtained on May 9, 2007, at a distance of approximately 1.1 million kilometers (700,000 miles) from Saturn. Image scale in the radial (horizontal) direction is about 6 kilometers (4 miles) per pixel.
